This is a transcripted version of a small part of the interview Angelina Jolie did with Bob Simon in 2011. All rights belong to CBS News.
Bob Simon: What did your friends and colleagues say when you deciced to direct a film about the war in Bosnia?
Angelina Jolie: I think they all thought it ws a bit crazy. I still think it’s crazy. We all spoke about every speech every scene and made sure that it was right and true. So, everybody helped to educate me and we all adjusted the script together.
Bob Simon:When you were writing the script did you realize that there was a mine in your way?
Angelina Jolie: I didn’t know it was going to be as sensitive.Everything was something to be very careful about and sensitive.
Bob Simon:It was one of your ambitions to punch through these gender sterotypes?
Angelina Jolie: It’s not something that I intentionally did, but when it came my way and I’m aware of it it was really fun to do. Especially that I just had my twins. I’ve been in a night gown for seven months, so I needed to get up and punch something.
Bob Simon:You wanted to be a funeral director and you even took courses to prepare yourself.
Angelina Jolie: Yes, I did. It sounds like this very strange eccentric very dark thing to do, but in fact I lost my grand-father and I was really upset with his funeral. So, maybe there are ways of this whole idea of how somebody passes and how family deals with his passing and what death is should be dressed in a different way. If this acting thing didn’t work out that was going to be my back-up.
Bob Simon:But were there other times when you could not joke about them?
Angelina Jolie: I went to heavy darker times and I survived them. I didn’t die young, so I am very lucky. There are other artists that didn’t survive certain things.
Bob Simon:What were you confronting?
Angelina Jolie: Nothing I want to go into any detail about, but I think that people can imagine that I did the most dangerous and I did the wors. For many reasons I shouldn’t be here.
Bob Simon:That is a very provocative phrase…
Angelina Jolie: Well, you just think that there were too many times were you came close to too many dangerous things, too many chances taken, too far.
Bob Simon: You could have done a light comedy, an action flick.
Angelina Jolie: I think I’d be terrible with the comedy.
